Re: ][c keyboard repair/clean
Sounds as if you have a 255 IIc which had stiffer keys than the later
versions. What I did was take the cover off, lift the keyboard up and
towards me and unplugged it. I removed the keycaps by using a dull
butterknife and evenly prying them up. Don't lift all at once in one
direction. Remove the sticky plastic mat under the keys and the plastic
liner above the springs.
Using a pointy knife I removed each of the springs from the keys. They
serve no purpose but to make a clicking noise when you type. I replaced
the plastic mats only after scrubbing them well in soap and water to
remove any dirt and stickiness. The keys simply pop back on afterward.
You will find the keys have a much softer feel now. Reassemble the
IIc and try it out. Some folks don't like it but I find it makes 'typing
a breeze on the older IIc's'.
Jeez...I'm a poet and don't know it. ;-)
