Bob,

Thanks! I feel confident I have isolated myself from broken keys. I had the 
contact plate off bottom of board and checked mechanical travel of all 
switches. Also checked switch contacts that ride on contact board. Boy
these keyboards were really cheesy. <g>

I think as previously suggested it may be a mis-seated chip or contact
and later today want to go though their suggestion list item by item.

To be sure control ket switch contact was not misshapen I did exactly
what you suggested swapping shift and control contacts. Result was
that shift key still worked and control function still locked.
