Can't open files in pfs:write

If anyone is still using pfs:write, vintage 1983, I'd like to talk to you.
I have a friend who, years ago, used said application to write several
documents which he's now trying to recover, and pfs:write won't "get" any
files from data disks.

When selecting item 4, get/save/remove, pfs:write doesn't respond to the
pressing of "4". Even with following the "4" with a <return>, the only
reaction is the cursor moving down one line on the screen. No disk access,
either of drive 1 or drive 2, occurs.
