Just to add some color to this debate. On the weekend I finally got
around to replacing the mechanism. I did not have a "black label"
drive, so I thought I would give it a go with a "red label" one from
an Apple 3.5" Drive. To my surprise after open the case there was a
red label mechanism in it and there was no sign that the drive had
ever been opened, the paint was still on the external screws. I
replaced it with a red label drive and all works fine. Thanks to those
who help me get the thing apart.
