Greetings and felicitations!

"Macintosh Forever." Ahem. I see that they even took that from us. :-/

Anyways, I've just purchased an Apple IIgs, after having been without one
for about five years now. I'm coming back up to speed, slowly but surely,
and have a few questions, if you'll be so kind as to hold my hand. :)
Thanks go to Brian Hammack for pointing me towards this newsgroup. :)

1) I was thrilled to see in the FAQ that one can use an Iomega ZIP drive
on a IIgs. What I'm not certain about is whether or not you can boot from
one. Anybody have any experience with this either way? I also saw in the
FAQ some "required hardware," but I was curious as to recommendations and
maybe even some tricks or traps regarding my choice of a SCSI controller.
In any event, back to the ZIP, I'd like to avoid messing around with a hard
drive, and if I can boot from the ZIP, I think that'd take care of me. My
old Chinook CT-40 was half-full when I sold it, and I was something of a
"power user" back then. :)

2) I am entertaining something that I think is a Moby Dick, white whale
fantasy, but humour me, please. I run a Windows NT domain here at home.
Please, no boos or catcalls, it keeps me very employed. :) Anyways, I'd
like to put the IIgs on the LAN, not only to say "This can be done," but
also to do some file and print sharing. If I'm not mistaken, NT's NTFS
shouldn't have any problems with GS/OS data/resource forks, as it handles
the Mac's just fine (in theory, as far as I know :), and I could
theoretically back things up with my NT backup solution, ARCserve. If NTFS
wouldn't handle those forks, fine, but I'd still put my BXYs and SHKs there
(and I can always make copies of my ZIP disks :). Anyways, I presume I'd
need a Mac in the middle, and wondered if anybody had any suggestions as to
where to begin. Is this total fantasy, or can I pull it off? While I'm at
it, can someone please clarify LocalTalk, AppleTalk, AppleShare, etc. for
me? I need something to print out to glue to my forehead. :) [If any of
this is in the FAQ, just point me in the right direction. Man, this thing
is immense! :) ]

If anybody's keeping track, I worked for Quality Computers back in '88-'91m
and some of you may have seen me on GEnie as "EL.CID" ("Scotty"). :)
