Better be more specific about "direct connection to the internet."
I assume that that's some form of ethernet connection, but there's
chances it could be some other oddball connection.
The topic of internet connections is addressed in the
comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html section 7.1, "Can my
Apple II connect to the internet?". For a short summary of the answer:
there is no available ethernet capability for any Apple II model.
Your best bet is a modem or null modem to a unix host that'll manage
the connection.
