On the side is fine. So is upside down.
However, on its side means that you will probably put it along side
your monitor, and some older monitors put out a stronger
electromagnetic field on one side than the other. How to tell?
Turn on your Apple and monitor and get a small transistor radio. Turn
it on. Put it on the right side of the monitor, and then the left. I
wouldn't put the drives on the side of the monitor where there's
static.
