Indeed, on a IIgs, if you don't boot into some form of DOS, be it DOS
3.3, ProDOS, or GS/OS, you can't save a thing. There's not even a
cassette out port like in earlier IIs. (Did the //c, //c+, or /// have
cassette ports? I never checked.) Still, you can do more with it like
that than you can do with a Mac, which will just sit there waiting for a
disk. I'd sit down and type in a simple drawing program in AppleSoft
when I wanted to kill some time.

You can still use AppleSoft BASIC from DOS 3.3 or earlier without access
to GS/OS, ProDOS, or BASIC.System or without any OS. It, like all Apple
IIs, can be used without any OS at all.

AppleSoft is in the ROMs. You need BASIC.System to interface it with
ProDOS 8 or a bootable DOS 3.3 disk to interface it with DOS 3.3. It
isn't tied much if at all to GS/OS, which is totally GUI.

(I'd love to find some schools auctioning off old IIgses or other IIs,
even IIes and //es in my area. I'd buy up as many as I can, even if
 only for the parts.)

(Original groups trimmed and followups set to comp.sys.apple2.)
