What you can do is to use UUCP instead of TCP/IP.  Proline and
METAL both support the UUCP protocol (unix to unix copy program)
to move files, news, and email back and forth between a UNIX box
and an Apple IIe, c, or GS.  They are designed to run through
a modem link, but serial would work as well.

UUCP is not instantaneous, but you can set the GS to "dial" into
the PC every hour, for example, to synchronize files.

I tried suggesting a UUCP based network for Jack Freiss' Apple II
email project, but because it required the II computers to be
equipped with $80 hard drives, it was rejected.
