CAN COMPUTER POWER SUPPLY +12V LINE BE USED TO CHARGE CAR BATTERY?
=================================================================
Help! One of my cars has gone dead --- electrical system is out.
My battery charger is also dead, and I am faced with the prospect of
buying a new battery charger.
QUESTION: Can an IBM-style power supply be used to charge a car battery?
It has a +12v line that might be suitable. The larger ones (200-230
watts) give 5-6 amps on that line.
If this is feasible, are there any complications likely? To avoid
overloading its yellow wire, I could run several yellow lines in parallel
to the line going to the battery copper clamp. I have many IBM-style
power units on the shelf and don't mind dedicating one of them for
car battery-charging.
Please respond quickly (today -- Monday) because my wife insists that I
buy a new battery charger otherwise!
Advice appreciated. Steve Buggie buggie@unm.edu
