clean it. I'm just trying to make the final decision. Is there any way
a deffective cable, GS, or other hardware could cause these problems?

Adam, take their advice and _clean your drive_!
It's a trivial thing to do, and _much_ cheaper than replacing it.
And, yes, a dirty head can do all the things you mention.
