Re: Dying Apple 3.5 drive
Well, it's now consistently trashing every disk it writes to! Trying to
back up Appleworks has given me 2 disks that refuse to format and 2 that
will format and copy just fine but report i/o errors when I try to read
them back. I'm down to one copy of Appleworks, one copy (besides my
original) of ProTERM, and I've wisely left my other backups alone. I've
had several people suggest to me to clean the drive. However, would a
dirty drive have problems writing to a disk but still read fine? Also, on
those disks that still format, I notice slight delays during formatting.
That is, the regular sound as the stepper motor clicks now has pauses
where the drive appears to just spin and then it continues.
What I'm looking for is other people who have had a similar problem. Did
cleaning the drive help or did you get a new/used drive without trying to
clean it. I'm just trying to make the final decision. Is there any way
a deffective cable, GS, or other hardware could cause these problems?
