As compared to the 33.6 modems?  Mostly it's a limit of the cabling between
you and your net connection.  If it's all modern digital optical cabling,
it's fine, but any copper and things get hairy.

I do remember hearing that you can achieve higher than 56k port speeds with
the turboASB thing so a 56k modem can actually do something more than 56k
on an Apple II (if you have a super serial card).
