printer help

a friend of mine got an apple IIe from his workplace and wants to hook up a
printer.
I have worked with apples before an tried to help him set it up.  I first
tried a Epson Action printer 5000 and it wouldn't work on the parallel card
port so he bought an old imagewriter that had a 9 pin connector male
(serial??). The Super Serial card had a 25 pin connector(female) on it so I
purchased a adapter to plug it in (IBM / Tandy from Radio Shack).  The
Select light on the Imagewriter wouldn't stay on (as if not plugged in) I
then plugged it into the parallel port (what the hell) and the select light
would come on but no print action.

Can anyone help?
