You need (as far as I know) AppleWorks 3.0 as minimum version for the DeskJet.
A DeskJet has a serial and a parallel connector. So if you already have a
parallel card in your IIe, you need the printer and a good cable. Otherwise,
you can use a (super)serial card to connect the printer to the computer.
Btw, the DeskJet driver for AppleWorks is (i think) NOT included in the
standard package. I have no idea where to get it (someone knows this?).
Applied Engineering came with an AW updater that has a DeskJet 500 driver...
