Customizing GS/OS desktop w/o system add-ons

I have a IIgs ROM01 with 1.7 meg RAM and and the ``easy install'' of 
System 6.0.1 installed on my Vulcan 40 meg hard drive.

Anyway, I want to know if it's possible to customize my desktop through 
simple programming without adding any more control panels, inits, 
extensions, extras or add-ons?

First, I want to change my desktop background colour from periwinkle blue 
to black.

And second, I want to remove my ``welcome to the iigs'' screen entirely and 
replace it with black also.

Any of these possible?
