Actually, yeah, I think it certainly was the case.  By the early 90s (when 14.4 
modems came out; I think 1991 but can't remember for sure), the Apple II 
platform was no longer a new, vibrant, rapidly-expanding market like, say, the 
PC market.  Why bother to spend the R&D costs when the externals *will* work?
