Help! //c to Powermac file transfers

Help needed:

I have numerous Appleworks 2.0 WP files to transfer to Clarisworks on my
PowerMac. I have successfully done this from modem to modem, but the 1200
baud rate is painfully slow. I had a modem port to modem port cable made
from the pinout diagrams, but haven't been able to utilize this yet. 

I am using Proterm 1.1c on the //c which will allow me to establish
"online" status without dialing out. But on the Mac, using ZTerm, I cannot
find a way to establish the link directly without connecting/answering a
ring/going through the modem. Surely there is a way to bypass a modem
hookup and establish a direct connection through the cable to set up an
Xmodem transfer session? How can I do this?
