Have you tried running a memory test program?  The IIgs self-test
doesn't test memory on a memory expansion card.  The IIgs hardware
might THINK you have lots of memory, but if it isn't working reliably
then you will end up with system hangs and crashes.

If I remember correctly, the IIgs self-test does check the memory on
the motherboard and, because you didn't get an error returned, your
motherboard RAM is fine.

This is why ProDOS 8 will still work because it only uses 128 KB of
the RAM on the motherboard.

It also could be something as simple as a bad connection between the
memory expansion slot and your motherboard or RAM chips coming loose
in their sockets on the memory card.

Just a few more things you can look into or try.
