Faint print problem

I can print with the "HP ThinkJet" (2225C) from my "Apple2e" using a
"grafstar" parallel printer card in "Apple Pascal," but the print is
very faint. The HP manual advises sending the printer control
characters "ESC (s1B" (ASCII: 27 40 115 49 66). That works from
WordPerfect" to the ThinkJet, but so far I've had no success from the
"Apple2e". Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
