Yes, it is

Difficult at best. It's my understanding that Apple will not provide the
needed info.

I don't know how much interest that there might really be out there, but
personally I wouldn't even entertain the idea of using a HFS partition on
my GS. Some people say that they have had no problems, BUT on the other
hand I have seen more horror stories posted online about screwed up
partitions than I have seen success stories.
