Better way would be to get a (gasp) Mac and a copy of Hermes BBS... Problem
with the Apple ][ was getting support for the faster modem speeds. If I
remember right GBBS only supported 9600 or maby 14.4... Been too long...
and little or no support for Z-Modem...
