Can you give a specific file that I can try downloading?  As I said in
another posting, I was able to download a file without any unusual
headers or encoding.

The only case I can recall like this is the Apple II files on
ftp.support.apple.com.  These are ShrinkIt files with AppleSingle
headers.  They were probably compressed on an Apple II, then uploaded to
the FTP site with a utility that adds an AppleSingle header.
