You can physically leave the card in any slot you like.  The only places
where you are likely to run into trouble is with programs which
erroneously assume that your printer is in Slot #1.  I know that the PFS:
programs are guilty of this, and if that is because of limitations of
Apple Pascal, then there could be problems with other Pascal programs. 
Likewise, if you try to boot a Pascal program with a disk controller in
Slot #7, you will get the MUST BOOT FROM SLOT 6 error.  But those are very
specific hardware considerations.  Properly written programs (i.e.
programs with configurable printer settings including heavy-hitters such
as AppleWorks, Apple Writer, Print Shop, and lots more) will work just
fine with the SSC in slot #2.

The de-facto slot standards for a ][e are...
1:  Printer
2:  Modem
3:  (80-column display firmware), special video board, etc.
4:  Mouse card, sound card, etc.
5:  3.5" disk controller, second 5.25" disk controller, sound card, etc.
6:  5.25" disk controller
7:  Hard disk drive, light pen, sound card, etc.

But, of course, with very few exceptions, most cards can work just fine in
any slot, and programmers are encouraged to either search for interface
cards (yes, it can be done...sort of), or ask the user where cards are
located instead of making assumptions.
