Yes, it does work on the IIgs.  The advantages it has over the Apple
brand interface are:
  - its less expensive (new)
  - it has 3 MIDI out ports rather than 1
  - it has a pass-thru switch so you can plug your printer or modem
    into it and not have to swap cables whenever you want to use it

The only real disadvantage is that it doesn't come with MIDI cables
like the Apple one.
