Using an emulator sounds, at first, like a good idea. Unfortunately,
emulators generally like to work with files on DSK's, etc. (i.e. some kind
of simulated A2 diskette). If you tried to access a PC file via BinSCII
runing on an emulator, the pathname syntax error was just the first of
several possible errors your emulated ProDOS noticed.

An emulator guru may know of some PC utility which will solve your
problem. (You may want to post a question to comp.sys.apple2.emulators.)
Unless there is a PC utility to create DSK's which allows moving PC files
to the DSK, it looks like your options are fairly limited.

You may have to look at BinSCII, figure out what it's doing, and
write a routine to do it on a PC. An alternative is to pick up a IIgs or
IIc+ at a swap meet and plop it down next to your PC at work.
