     Appleworks 2.x imposes a limit (somewhere around 70 or so) on the
number of files allowed in a folder. The problem with the limit is that
Awks does not complain about exceeding any limit; it just starts bombing
in strange ways. (Failing to recognize or correctly load perfectly good
Text files is one.)  I do not know if version 3.x does this.

     Otherwise, the usual tries are to  ... scrap Desktop (in Icons
folder), scrap any screen savers, scrap unnecessary Inits, scrap Apple
Talk, scrap odd NDA's/CDA's. "Scrap" does not necessarily mean to trash.
Sticking "scrapped" stuff (like Inits, AppleTalk drivers, ...) in a
SCRAPPED folder is sufficient.
