GS problems
Ouch! My IIGS system, especially AppleWorks 3.0, is really starting
to bug me. Some of the gems:
1. AppleWorks crashes easily. Recording macros causes them, using
default macros may cause them. In particular, I have a custom macro
to put AW in "hot keys" mode. It vacillates between perfection and
crash. I have found few patterns to the crash other than it WILL
crash if I invoke this macro after booting AW after running and
exiting any game (see item #4).
2. AppleWorks will not load any text files created by Teach or
ProTerm. The files in Teach have been saved as text files, not Teach
files. In ProTerm, this includes ASCII downloads as well as those
originated in the editor. Uh oh...and I just discovered that AW
won't print text to my ProTerm directory, nor will it save an AW file
format to that directory, yet Teach transfers stuff in and out of
there just fine.
3. SideWays refuses to load my AW spreadsheets. It keeps telling me
the files are segmented, but they aren't, never have been. I've
reduced their sizes by deleting lots of rows and
columns...nope...still won't load. (They're not really long to begin
with.)
4. After playing most games, I return to Wings (my launch program)
and boot AW. It will crash randomly. The only way to get AW to play
fair is to shut down and reboot the system, then immediately go into
AW.
5. And the piece de resistance. After backing up my 40 meg (30 and
10 meg partitions) hard drive with "Bakkup", I screened it and
cleaned it with "Deliverance" and it still would not defragmentize it
with "Renaissance". Is Vitesse still in business and offering tech
support?
FWIW--All the games run as well as ever. Do you suppose I need to
totally reinstall all my programs, or just my system, or something?
I feel I am teetering on the brink of a major disaster here. I have
a ROM 01 with 4 megs, AE 2400 modem, Apple High Speed SCSI card. I
am using System software 6.0. Any comments will be appreciated
(well--except flames, etc. 8-)
