Another possibility is that the little magnet located on the back of the
tab on the left front corner of the top cover is missing.  The printer
won't do anything if the top is off, and the printer "thinks" the cover
is off if the magnet is missing. If it is missing, try stuffing a small
magnet into that corner (with the top off).  If the flashing light goes
out, then you need only find a piece of magnet and glue it in place to
fix the problem.  The magnet may even be found inside the printer if you
are lucky.
