I've been trying to figure this out myself for about 8 months--and have included 
many from this news group (inc. D. Empson) and our university.  My understanding 
is that it would be very difficult to do, depending what you want to do once 
you're on the network.  I want to have true bi-directional data flow, so I can 
send and receive files and, especially, exchange email.

The best answer is the Apple II WorkStation Card (A2WSC)--a LocaTalk card for the 
Apple IIe Enhanced.  It's a neat card.  Ex: placed in slot 7, you can boot your 
IIe off a Mac HD running AppleShare.  It has ROM chips on the board with the 
AppleTalk protocols builtin, the physical female connectors needed to attach your 
network box (PhoneNet or Apple) and cables, etc.

A major problem: availablity.  Apple doesn't make the card anymore and no one has 
come out with a replacement.  You can find cards occationally in csa2.marketplace 
or from schools that are getting rid of their Apples.  Sometimes used apple 
stores (Sun Remarketing, etc.) will have A2WSC's, but I've seen prices as high as 
$350.00, more than I want to pay (I've found some cards and have paid around 
$50--but maybe I'm just lucky).  Super Serial Cards are all over the place for 
cheap.

If you find an answer to using the SSC as a LocalTaklk gateway, please let me 
know.
