Firstly, you're in the wrong place. That is, unless you intend
to make it run on Apple II computers, which are not macs.

Others have been there, done that. Called Unix in all its variants.
Linux is what I use; others may tend towards FreeBSD or NetBSD.
I really don't think you understand how big a task writing a
quality OS is. Sure, anyone can hack together something that does X in
a weekend, but to do it right and get others to sign on is much
harder. (BTW, linux kernel sources are something like 14MB, not to
mention anything else. Even with a bunch of speed typists, typing
that much in would take a darn long time. Then you need to try to
compile and run it.)
