Apple II+ Help

I just bought an Apple II+ computer as-is from a used-stuff store. No one at the
store knew how to work it, so they gave me both II+'s they had in stock. I now have
2 II+ computers I don't know how to get working. As far as I know, neither one is
broken, but I can't get them to boot up.
Here's the situation. First of all, I have no moniter, but a tv hook-up
thing that works fine. I have 2 disk II drives, which I hooked into the proper
card in slot-6. I think everyhthing is in correctly, but when I turn on the
computers one of 2 things happen. On one of the computers, it appears to boot up
correctly (except that it doesn't beep), the "Apple II" comes up at the top of the
screen, but then nothing happens. I've tried all the disks I have, and both disk
drives, but I can't get it working. Oh, if I hit the reset button I can get into
the ] prompt, but I get a "SYNTAX ERROR" message if I type "catalog".
On the second computer, when everything is hooked up the same, I turn it on
and all I get is a screen full of random characters, or characters in rows going
down the screen vertically. None of the keys work, and I can't reset or boot into
BASIC. Please help me get these computers working. Thanks!
