Why use a shell? Ever heard of Deskplay? (sorry, blatant plug)

No, Beatbox isn't more "accurate" than Shellplay. As you mentioned
correctly, Beatbox chokes on some few MODs. What's more of a problem
is that sample playback in some MODs can be very grainy and noisy.
It is true that Shellplay also has some minor problems. Three out
of my 300 MODs aren't played back correctly.
Honestly speaking, if I have to choose between a Shellplay/Deskplay
combination or Beatbox, I prefer the first one!

MED support is more or less uninteresting, since there are only a
handful of MODs which use MEDs special features over ProTracker. The
point is that most Amiga musicians who are using MED as their editor
of choice (for example, our very own Dreamer uses (Octa) MED because
he likes the editor/interface much better than ProTracker's) have
to save their songs in ProTracker format because of the players used
in the demos they are making the musics for, which are essentially
ProTracker players (it's the standard in the Amiga demo scene).

P.S. Joseph, how's PlayStation gambling going? :)
