appletalk quit working

i've run out of things to try and need some more suggestions.
i have (well, had) a gs networked to a mac. but something
happened and the network connection no longer works. as far
as i can tell, the mac software end is fine. (i'll have
to check the actual computer shortly.)

when i boot gsos, the gs 'hangs' soon after the thermometer
starts (the thermometer keeps going tho) if the appletalk
cable is plugged in. (using printer port, but that was all
setup fine before) if i unplug the cable, the boot continues
to completion. likewise, if i try to open or close the
appleshare cdev with the cable plugged in, the machine
'hangs' until i unplug the cable. then all is fine again,
except no network.

i've tried software re-installs, but nothing has corrected
the problem yet.
can anyone offer any other suggestions, things to check,
try, components to hit with a hammer, whatever?
