Hmm... Kermit is nice.  You've changed the serial driver, so it
really is the SSC driver?

Wait... that part is working.

It sounds like modem incompatibility.

Try turning off data compression on the modem.  If that's not
enough, turn off the error correction as well.  Some of the
newer "nice" modems won't connect to the older modems
if error correction/compression is on.
