1. Great extra internet terminal, with external modem (9600
max?), and shell account ISP, and ProTerm with VT100 (dumb terminal)
emulation. Can use Lynx (with some ISP's) for web viewing. Can use the
ISP's Unix Email reader (PINE) and News programs (TIN) for those
functions.
2. Robot controller. See comp.robotics.misc for other robot
stuff. Advantages: runs on 12V (the origional version), compact, also
had an LCD screen (rare). Serial ports can program devices, or
directly control robot. What's new is that there are now one-chip
computers that run basic programs, which you write for and program
with the IIc.
3. Appliance controller, using X10 stuff. X10 controller plugs
into wall, takes serial commands, runs program even when computer off.
Radio Shack RSU 10037679 $69.99, plus a cable you'll have to make.
Software is for Windows, but you can write a basic program, or the old
DAK software is still out there.
4. Dedicated caller ID database. Using an external modem with
caller ID functions (new), and a database program you'll either have
to write or patch. Modem could record at least what number called
when, or if it knew the caller, could identify them by name. Could
also do "screen pops" to pop-up the right record for each caller.
Could page you if called by certain miscreants, or send the log over
the line to work.
5. Condition monitor. Use IEEE adapter connected to par port to
connect temp / pressure / water detectors, whatever. Can record
conditions, page you if thresholds exceeded, even graph the levels.
Completely adjustable sampling frequency, could handle a hundred
sensors. Variation of burglar alarm.
That's enough for now.
