Actually, I believe that the "][" was left because some apple software
checked that location in ROM to verify an original apple was being used
during the clone wars. I remember I had to reburn a friends ROMs in his
clone to change "GO!" to "APPLE ][" in order to get it to run something or 
other. (I don't remember what though, that was a decade ago!). We also had 
to re-locate some of the boot code in the ROM to fool the clone check.

AH! the apple...those were the good old days *grin*
