This could be a hardware problem. On most if not all recent Macs,
attempting to format a ProDOS 800K disk results in a disk that reads fine
on the Mac, but is completely unreadable on the IIgs.

I've found that I can successfully copy files onto a ProDOS 800K disk from
my PowerMac ONLY if the disk was formatted on the IIgs. If I format the
disk on the Mac, I just get I/O errors.

It doesn't sound like you are having exactly the same problem in this case.

DiskCopy doesn't do anything special with the disk data - it just does a
raw copy of the disk contents, so it is hard to see how it could cause any
problems.

There is a shareware program called ShrinkWrap which can do everything
DiskCopy can do, and can also mount disk images.
