One inch is the default left margin for AppleWorks. Even if the text seems
to line up on the far left side of the screen.

Are the columns lined up on the left side of the page (no margin) when
you print?
Also, where are you in the doccument when you make your adjustments? The
adjustments only take place below where they are set, so if you make your
adjustments when the cursoror 2/3s of the way through the doccument, the
top 2/3 won't be affected.
Hold down the Apple key and press Z to see where in the doccument your
adjustments are.
