There are two ways to save a document in AppleWorks. You could use
OpenApple-P and then select "Print to Disk (ASCII Text)" which will
strip all formatting. This is the equivalent of *.txt format in
the PC world.
The second way, OpenApple-S, saves the file in WP format, which
should preserve all formatting.

Now THAT is strange if you saved w/OpenApple-S.

AppleWorks dosn't display the left margin on the screen. It only
shows up when printed. Instead, on screen the text simply shrinks
to the amount that will finally print out.
AppleWorks does this for speed.
To see this graphically, load a document and set rm and lm both to zero.
Now set rm to "1." One inch of text is pushed out from the right side.
So far so good. Now remember how the text looks and set lm to "1". Wow,
there is still no space on the left side, but look at the right side.
Two inches of text have now been pushed to the left. In otherwords, it
looks like you have a rm of 2. Now print the document. Notice that you
have perfect one inch margins, right and left. They also show up when
"printing" to the screen.

Strange. My first reaction is to ask: are you using OpenApple-S to
save? If you are and formatting is lost, there is something wrong.
The fact that some other commands don't work suggests that the
program is not operating right.
One possible culprit is an addon(s) such as a DA or a Finder Extension
(eg. Twilight II). These are notorious in messing up some timing
critical programs. Try booting directly into ProDOS 8 (like booting
into MS-DOS, but not starting Windows) by pressing down the "8" key
while booting. Then navigate using the program selector to the
AppleWorks directory and launch it. This will solve addon conflicts.
If these two possibilities are ruled out, after you reload a
document, hit OpenApple-Z to zoom in on the formatting codes and
post what you see to help us help you get to the bottom of this.
Good luck.
