connection with a UNIX server

HI,
 Soory if it the wrong group, but I don't know where
 to post thsi question.

 I have an apple mac LC520 that I would like to connect
 to my unix server(using probably TCP/IP but I am not sure).

 I woudl like to be able to mount the UNix file system, on
 the mac, and be able to create/modify and save files
 on the nix system, but from the mac.

 question: - Is it hard to do?
           - what kind of hardware and sofware do I need?
