Block 2 hard drive damage

My difficulty with an IBM OEM-31080 hard drive seem to have no end in sight.
Last night the drive suffered damage to block 2 and will not boot.  In fact, 
GS/OS hangs when the drive is even on the SCSI chain and I'm booting from 
another disk.  Is there any way I can recover the information on it's 25 
partitions by repairing block 2?  Can I get access to block 2 despite the 
booting problems?

I have a Rom 3 with 4mb RAM, ZipGS 7/32, Apple Rev C SCSI driving the OEM 
drive, and RamFAST Rev D driving an Iomega Zip drive.  I can boot from the 
Zip or a 3.5 when the OEM is disconnected from the system.  If I try to boot 
with the OEM connected the OEM's light will flash off and on continuously.
This problem began after two new incidents: (1) I installed some kind of 
head parking CDA/NDA/INIT and when I properly shut down the Finder the OEM's 
head parked before the Finder screen blanked so the system hung at that 
screen.  So I just shut the compuer off.  (2) My son used the computer next 
and after playing some new games on the OEM drive he closed all the folders 
from the Finder and instead of properly shutting down, he just switched the 
power off.  The next time I switched on the GS, it didn't get past the text
screen that identifies my Apple IIgs as a Rom 3 machine.

The only headway I've made with the drive is to boot a disk utility with the
3.5 while the OEM is connected to the Rev C card.  During the boot process 
the OEM's light flashes and the thermometer bar just continues filling to 
the right while there is no disk access.  After about 5 minutes of flashing 
and hanging the boot process continues and the disk utility seems to 
recognize only the first partition out of 25 on the OEM.  However, it 
indicates that there is an MLI error on block 2 (I think the error was $2D).
I want to recover the thousands of files I have on that drive big time!
If they cannot be recovered, how can I format the drive considering the 
system won't even recognize it to format it?

Any SCSI troubleshooting ideas?  This drive has been in use for under a 
year, is in excellent condition, and will not work with the RamFAST card.
