RE:My new GS
COngratulations on getting an Apple IIgs. Hope you enjoy it.
If you have only 512k memory, that's not enough to run GS/OS nor most IIgs
specific programs (only some early games will run). Also, be aware that
that was the standard configuration Apple almost gave away to schools when
the IIgs first came out. That was version ROM00 and there was a free
upgrade to ROM01, but many schools never bothered to upgrade. Turn on the
computer and see if it says ROM01 at the bottom of the screen during the
first second or so after powered on. If not, it's ROM00 and can only be
used as a glorified Apple IIe.
If it is ROM01, upgrade the memory card (which must have 256k on it now) to
1 meg.
System software is available through Apple II user groups. Applea dealers
also have all Apple II operating systems on their "Media Exchange" CD, but
most dealers don't even know they have it on their CD. They can make copies
for you for a nominal "duplication fee." You just have to convince them
they have it. Tell them to look in the "Apple II Software" folder on their
"Media Exchange" CD. They can make ProDOS 3.5" disks for you from their Mac.
