It could be that your keyboard controller is what is causing all of
your troubles. As for you're description of what happens when you
press both apple keys on power on, I'll have to leave that for someone
more familiar with the //c to comment on. This might be the inbuilt
diagnostic working, but I don't know what it looks like on the //c
(having never owned one). Have you left it running for a while after
powering on with the 2 apples pressed? On the //e it runs for a minute
or two with a changing pattern on the screen and will print "kernel
ok" IIRC when completed (its been ages since I've even done it on
the //e!).

Someone else more familiar with the //c should chip in here... <nudge,
nudge>  ;-)
