one key doesn't work by itself. you need to hold down both open-apple and
closed-apple keys together while turning the iic on to activate the
built-in diagnostic. and even that doesn't work properly on the 255
(first version) iic.  get an applesoft prompt and type print peek (64447)
and hit return to find out what version you have. 255 = #1, 0 = #2, 3 =
#3, 4 = #4, 5 = iic+.
