My situation exactly. I very rarely need a mouse in ProDOS-8 (I don't
use UltraMacros in AppleWorks, because I'm using AppleTalk, and I don't
have Publish-It!), so it seemed a waste of a slot.

The other benefit of having the SCSI card in slot 4 (or lower) is that
you can set the startup slot to 5 (or 6, or Scan, as desired) and allow
the IIgs to boot off a floppy if there is one in the drive, or off the
hard drive otherwise (without having to go into the Control Panel to
change anything each time).

On a ROM 1 IIgs, the only way you can do this without losing any
features of your lower slots would be to use AppleTalk via slot 7 and
put the SCSI card in slot 1.

You can put an Apple IIe mouse card in another slot if you have a ROM
1, and it will be used by GS/OS as well as ProDOS-8. The ROM 3
doesn't support a IIe mouse card under GS/OS, but will under ProDOS-8.
