Re: IIe Problem - flashing power light!

A word about the problem...

First of all, the tip to remove all of the cards is a good one. I also
suggest connecting a monitor (or barring that, run a cable from the ]['s
video out to the video LINE IN jack on a friendly VTR) so you can see what
is going on.

With all of the cards out, a ][e should *beep*, then clear the screen, and
display:
                Apple ][
]

or possibly:
                Apple //e
]

leaving you with a flashing cursor at the ] prompt. If you get that, then
you are in good shape, most likely. If you get that far, turn off the
power and insert the 80-column display board. Power the machine up, and
you should get the same result as before. Shut the machine down.

Next, try putting the disk controller card into Slot #6, making sure that
the drive is properly connected. This is particularly critical if you
have the Disk ][ drives with the 20-pin IDC connector...it's easy to
misalign the pins and the connector. When you power up the machine, you
should get the "Apple ][" splash, the beep, and no cursor...instead, the
disk drive should be grinding away.

My guess is that this won't happen, if you're having problems, indicating
a bad disk controller card. But I do suggest that you hook up a monitor
'cause what you see on the screen can be very helpful. And a blinking
power light *can* just mean that the bulb is dying or is mis-connected.

A word about bumping boards...
When you pull or install a card, I suggest that you leave the computer
turned off, but leave it plugged in to a grounded outlet so that you have
a ground path for static discharge. Just touch the power supply before
you touch anything else.

Good luck!
