You need to run the cable between the printer ports, not the modem ports.
On the GS, you can set it up to use the modem port if you want, but you'll
need special software on the Mac end (Open Transport I think?) to get it to
run on anything other than the printer port.
On the GS end, which port to use is determined by which of Slot 1 and Slot 2
is set to AppleTalk.
