It would be difficult for the motherboard to "lose a channel", because
all channels are multiplexed onto the same output signal. It might be
possible for the channel select signals from the Ensoniq to have
developed a fault, but at worst, this would cause both channels to
come out the same one.

Possibly the Audio Animator (from AE)? I haven't paid much attention
to sound cards, so I don't really know.
