Make sure that your DIP switches are set correctly. I had a problem with
bad blocks causing the ][gs to hang everytime it tried to read the bad
blocks. Turned out that I didn't have the DIP switches set correctly for
use on a ][gs. Salvation can help your bad blocks, it'll make a 'bad blocks'
file, that will lock out those nasty sectors. 

Also, try the 'secret' command from the partition manager. Type 'AE' at the
main menu, and do a scan for bad blocks.

Also, try Apple's Advanced Disk Utilities, Zero the partition, it might help.
